Tokyo World Athletics Championships 2025: Hammer Time in Tokyo with Rogers, Andersen, and a World-Class Field Set for Explosive Showdown

The women’s hammer throw in Tokyo 2025 is shaping up to be one of the most thrilling field events of the championships. With Olympic champions, world record holders, and rising stars all in contention, the competition promises fireworks in the throwing circle.

Camryn Rogers: Canada’s Golden Force

Canadian powerhouse Camryn Rogers enters Tokyo as the reigning Olympic champion (Paris 2024, 76.97m) and world champion (Budapest 2023, 77.22m). She has been in phenomenal form throughout 2025, twice surpassing the 78-metre barrier with throws of 78.88m at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene and 78.09m in Madrid.

Rogers is hungry to add a third consecutive global gold to her resume, cementing her place as one of the all-time greats in hammer throwing.

Brooke Andersen: The World Leader
The biggest challenge to Rogers may come from her American rival Brooke Andersen, who currently tops the world list with a monster throw of 79.29m in Tucson last May. Andersen, the 2022 world champion in Eugene (78.96m), also showed consistency with a 79.22m performance in Lucca. Although she finished second at the US Championships this year (75.14m), her season-best makes her a serious gold-medal favorite in Tokyo.

DeAnna Price: A Veteran Contender
Former world champion DeAnna Price (Doha 2019) continues to prove she’s a force to be reckoned with. She claimed the US title this year with 78.53m and added a strong third-place showing at the Prefontaine Classic (75.35m). Price, known for her competitive spirit and championship pedigree, brings valuable experience to the American team.

Rising American Strength
The US squad is one of the strongest in history, with Rachel Richeson also earning her spot. Richeson, who threw a personal best of 78.80m in Ramona, adds depth to an already powerful American lineup. With Andersen, Price, and Richeson, Team USA could realistically sweep the podium.

European and Global Challengers

Europe and Asia also bring strong medal contenders:

  • Krista Tervo (Finland): National record holder (77.14m), consistent performer on the circuit.
  • Silja Kosonen (Finland): Winner of the European Throwing Cup in Nicosia (77.07m), part of Finland’s exciting new generation.
  • Anita Wlodarczyk (Poland): The living legend of the event, with three Olympic golds, four world titles, and the world record (82.38m). Although past her prime, she remains a crowd favorite and national icon.
  • Sara Fantini (Italy): European champion in Rome 2024, national record holder (75.77m), and a regular Diamond League finalist.
  • Bianca Ghelber (Romania): European champion in Munich 2022, experienced and consistent at major meets.
  • Rosa Loga (France): European bronze medallist in Rome 2024, looking to shine on home-continent soil.
  • Karine Koch Jacobsen (Denmark): National record holder (74.22m) and runner-up at the Nairobi Continental Tour.

China’s New Wave

China brings youthful talent with Jiale Zhang, the world U20 record holder (77.24m) and 2024 world U20 champion in Lima, alongside Jie Zhao, the Paris 2024 Olympic bronze medallist. Their presence signals China’s growing influence in the hammer throw.
