Behind the Scenes: Creating a Children’s Book for Real Families
by: Denise N. Fyffe
Every book begins with a moment — a tug, a whisper, a nudge that refuses to leave you alone. For me, the spark for Babies Are Tiring, Aren’t They? When Baby Came Home came from watching families navigate the beautiful, exhausting season of welcoming a new baby. I saw the joy, of course. But I also saw the quiet questions in the eyes of older siblings, the fatigue in parents’ shoulders, and the way everyone was trying to adjust to a new rhythm without losing themselves in the process.
I wanted to create something that didn’t pretend everything was perfect. Something that didn’t gloss over the chaos or the emotions. Something that felt like real life — the kind of life where love is abundant, but so is laundry; where joy is present, but so is exhaustion; where siblings adore the baby one minute and feel overwhelmed the next. That’s the world this book was born from.
Why a Multicultural Family Was Non‑Negotiable
Representation wasn’t an afterthought — it was the foundation. As a Jamaican‑American woman, I know what it feels like to search for stories that reflect your family’s skin tones, hair textures, cultural rhythms, and everyday realities. Too often, those stories are missing. Too often, children grow up without seeing themselves in the books they read.
I wanted to change that.
The family in this book is intentionally multicultural — Jamaican‑American, interracial, vibrant, and full of personality. Their home reflects the warmth of Caribbean culture blended with the everyday rhythms of American family life. Their interactions feel familiar to families who rarely see themselves represented in children’s literature. And for families who don’t share the same background, the story becomes a window into a world that is both different and deeply relatable.
This wasn’t about checking a diversity box. It was about honoring real families — families like yours, families like mine, families who deserve to see their love reflected on the page.
The Creative Process: From Heart to Watercolor
People often imagine writing a children’s book as a quick, simple process. But this book required intention at every step. The rhythm had to feel natural. The repetition had to feel comforting. The humor had to feel honest. And the illustrations had to carry emotional safety — soft edges, warm tones, and expressions that children could trust.
The watercolor style wasn’t chosen for aesthetics alone. Watercolor has a way of softening the world. It makes even chaotic moments feel gentle. It wraps the story in warmth, which is exactly what families need during the transition of welcoming a new baby. I wanted children to feel held by the art, not overstimulated by it.
And then there were the characters — each one shaped with care, each one reflecting a real emotional experience. The tired parents. The curious siblings. The baby who demands attention without meaning to. Every expression, every gesture, every detail was crafted to feel authentic.
What I Hope Families Feel When They Read It
More than anything, I wanted this book to feel like a companion — a story that sits with families during a season of change and says, “You’re not alone.” I wanted parents to feel seen in their tiredness and children to feel understood in their confusion. I wanted siblings to laugh, to point at the pages, to say, “That’s like us!” or “Our baby does that too!”
If families walk away with anything, I hope it’s this:
- Love doesn’t shrink when a new baby arrives — it expands.
- Sibling rivalry isn’t a problem — it’s a conversation.
- Families don’t have to be perfect — they just have to stay connected.
This book is a celebration of real families — diverse, imperfect, loving, and growing. It’s a reminder that even in the busiest seasons, there is beauty. There is humor. There is grace.
And there is always room for one more heart.
