The Shifting Landscape of the Modern Family
by: Denise N. Fyffe
Families have always evolved, but never at the pace we are witnessing today. What once took generations to change can now shift in a single decade. Technology, migration, culture, economics, and global influence have reshaped the very idea of what a family looks like, how it functions, and what it needs to survive.
The modern family is not simply a new version of the old; it is a living system being stretched, challenged, and redefined in real time.
Growing up in Jamaica, I saw firsthand what family looked like before the digital age took hold. Homes were loud with life — children running in and out of yards, neighbors calling across fences, aunties and uncles dropping by without warning. Community was not an idea; it was a daily experience. You learned from the people around you, not from a screen. You were corrected by adults who were not your parents, and you were expected to respect them.
Family was not limited to the people who lived in your house; it included the people who lived on your street, in your church, and in your wider community.
There was a rhythm to life that created stability. Even when resources were limited, there was structure. Even when families struggled, there was a sense of belonging. And even when conflict arose, there was always someone older, wiser, or more experienced to step in and guide you.
That was the Jamaica I knew — a place where family was both personal and communal, where children were raised by many hands, and where values were passed down through stories, traditions, and lived example.
