International Women’s Day: 8 Women who made the World a better place in 2014 – Part 8 – Zainab Bangura

We continue to celebrate the women of the world, Zainab Banguranot only on one day, International Women’s Day, but for as long as we can. Enjoy the post, original posted on Huffington Post:

8. Zainab Bangura pushed countries to recognize that sexual violence in conflict has to stop.

As the U.N. special representative on sexual violence in conflict, Zainab Bangura has seen first-hand the devastating effect of rape used as a weapon of war. Bangura, who lived through the 1991-2002 civil war in her native Sierra Leone, told Reuters: “For me, one rape is too many.”

Since she took up the role in 2012, Zainab Bangura says she has seen “a political momentum that is unprecedented” to combat sexual violence in conflict, including a U.N. declaration in which 140 member states have committed to ending rape in conflict, Buzzfeed reported. In February, Bangura’s office struck another victory when the U.N. and African Union signed an agreement to prevent and respond to conflict-related violence in Africa.

International Women’s Day: 8 Women who made the World a better place in 2014 – Part 7 – Lena Klimova

We continue to celebrate the women of the world, Lena Klimovanot only on one day, International Women’s Day, but for as long as we can. Enjoy the post, original posted on Huffington Post:

7. Lena Klimova gave Russian gay teens a voice online.

Just days before the Sochi Winter Olympics opened in February, young journalist Lena Klimova was charged under Russia’s controversial ban on “gay propaganda.” Authorities targeted Klimova because of her incredibly popular “Youth-404″ website (404 designating “page not found”) where gay teens write about their struggles with homophobia in the country.

Faced with a stringent fine, Lena Klimova was most concerned about Russian youth losing access to the forum, according to The Guardian. “If it will be closed, LGBT teenagers will lose the only place where they can openly speak about themselves and receive advice they need to live. It will be a catastrophe,” she wrote on Facebook. But with the world’s attention on Russia during the Olympics in Sochi the case was halted and Klimova’s website was able to give a voice to outcast teenagers for at least a while longer.

A brilliant game against Argentina, winning by 1 goal to nil in extra time.

Argentina employed great defending and held off Germany leading the game into extra time. However, Germany’s fresh leg subs sinks a goal with 6 minutes to go in play. Argentina nor Lionel Messi could just not get back.

Lets look back at Germany’s moments.

2014 FIFA World Cup: Dutty World Cup tactics in Brazil

As this 2014 FIFA World Cup progresses, I am convinced even more that this has been one of the duttiest World Cup ever. Players are being attacked and ruthlessly injured; case in point Neymar Jr. from Brazil.

I read an article recently – In a World Cup With Aggressive Play, Yellow and Red Cards Vanish – which cited that Fifa had ordered their referees to lessen the number of yellow cards being issued and as a result, players from various teams have been using shady tactics to dismantle their opponents. Certainly, some have even used thuggery tactics which would make any WWE wrestler proud.

Fifa certainly has made a grave error in judgement, because what was once seen as a 2014 FIFA World Cup game that brings joy and excitement, now, seems to be akin to Rumble in the Bronx with Mohammed Ali.

Take a look at the pictures, to see a few of the 2014 FIFA World Cup players who have suffered, gravely.

Eleven suspected ticket touts who were supplied by Fifa insider arrested in Rio after phone-tapping sting, say Brazilian police

Police in Rio de Janeiro have said a Fifa official is involved in a US$100m ticket scandal.

Officers have arrested 11 suspected ticket touts as part of an investigation called Operation Jules Rimet, which has tapped the mobile phones of the suspects.

Fabio Barucke, the police investigator in charge of the case, said a Fifa official who was a source of the tickets had access to Fifa offices and stadiums and match tickets.

Some tickets have been re-sold for eight times their face value.

Investigators are planning to meet Fifa and its official ticket agency Match, which sells World Cup hospitality packages.

Fifa’s head of media Delia Fischer said it had not received any information from the police identifying the person.

“Maybe it’s not from Fifa – it’s often easy to come to a conclusion about who is Fifa,” she said.

Barucke said the ticketing ring aimed to make up to $US100m, around £60m, by illegally re-selling tickets and that the group had operated at previous World Cups.

The suspected ringleader has been named as Mohamadou Lamine Fofana, an Algerian man who was previously staying at the Copacabana Palace hotel, where all the Fifa top executives are staying.

Barucke believes Fofana was the middleman and that the ticket source was “someone higher up” the chain.

“He [Fofana] has tickets from hospitality, from Match, and he was close friends with someone from Fifa who was in the middle of that negotiation – who was helping out with that negotiation.

“We were able to identify there is the participation of someone from Fifa.”
