How to Manage a Shopaholic Addiction

A shopaholic must make the decision to discontinue shopping to have an excellent chance of quitting the habit on a long-term basis.

If the person does not see it negatively, then chances are they will go back to the habit.

Steps to Manage a Shopping Addiction

Shopaholics must see the effects of their behavior on the people around them. They have to recognize that they are driving away their friends and destroying the relationship that they have with their spouses and children.

  1. One drastic action that a shopaholic can do is to give up all financial freedom and responsibilities to someone else.

This person can be a close friend, family member of significant other. They will be responsible for paying your utilities, car loan, house payments and other expenses. This can be done for a short period of time, just enough until you can handle your responsibilities in a different way.

  1. Identifying what personally causes someone to shop is another important step.

This is very important as one can return to shopping months down the line. A shopaholic should speak with a counselor or go to a support group, which is a great way to work on identifying your trigger. Using the tool of meditation also helps shopaholics. This allows them to peacefully reflect on their lives, problems, and any other issue they are facing.

It also helps them release and reduce stress which might have forced them into shopping in the first place.

  1. Lifestyle practices must also be changed when giving up shopping.

If you have not seen the movie ‘Confession of a shopaholic’ you should. This will show you someone who has the problem but overcomes it in the end for what she cared about. ‘Confession of a shopaholic’ was just a movie; but to many it is a reality and something that they must deal with every day.

There are support groups and friends that will be willing to help anyone get over the addiction.

The utmost discipline is needed to manage any addiction and having the right shopaholic resources also helps.
