by Denise N. Fyffe
As the Paris 2024 Olympic Games approach, Jamaica is set to showcase a formidable lineup of athletes who are poised to make their mark on the global stage. With a rich history of Olympic success and a roster filled with world champions, Jamaica’s team promises to deliver thrilling performances and memorable moments.
Leading the charge is the iconic Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, a two-time Olympic champion in the 100 meters, having claimed gold at both the 2008 Beijing and 2012 London Games. Known for her incredible speed and consistency, Fraser-Pryce also secured a silver medal in the 100 meters at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. She will be a favorite once again as she aims to add to her illustrious career.
Joining her is Shericka Jackson, a versatile sprinter and a two-time world champion in the 200 meters. Jackson has shown her prowess in both the 100 meters and 200 meters, having won a bronze medal in the 100 meters at the Tokyo Olympics. In Paris, she will compete in both sprint events, adding depth and strength to Jamaica’s sprinting contingent.
In the hurdles, Hansle Parchment will defend his 110 meters hurdles title. Parchment’s victory in Tokyo was a highlight for the Jamaican team, and he is determined to retain his crown in Paris. Another rising star is Kishane Thompson, who won the national 100 meters title with an impressive time of 9.77 seconds. Thompson’s debut on the Olympic stage is highly anticipated as he looks to make his mark in the sprint event.
The Jamaican team also boasts world U20 champion Jaydon Hibbert in the triple jump. Hibbert’s entry into the senior ranks brings high expectations, as his youth and talent position him as a future star. In the shot put, Danniel Thomas-Dodd, the 2019 world silver medallist, will aim to continue her success and challenge for a podium finish.
