Paris Summer Olympics 2024: Who is Kishane Thompson Jamaica’s Paris 2024 Olympics Gold Medal Hope

by Denise N. Fyffe

Jamaica has long been synonymous with sprinting excellence, and the Paris 2024 Olympics will once again showcase the nation’s athletic prowess. While Jamaica’s presence in other sports is limited—with only four sports represented and a historical focus on athletics—the country’s passion for sprinting remains unparalleled, with 87/88 Olympic medals in athletics alone.

The Sprinting Nation

There was a boat load of Jamaican athletes at the Paris 2024 Olympic ceremony – literally. 54 out of the 58 Jamaican athletes made the near-8,000km journey from the Caribbean to Europe will compete in athletics.

This includes for the 100m, 200m, 400m, 100m hurdles, 110m hurdles, 400m hurdles, and both the 4x100m and 4x400m relays. Among these athletes, one name stands out: Kishane Thompson.

The Rise of Kishane Thompson

Born in 2001, Kishane Thompson is set to make his Olympic debut in Paris. At the Jamaican Olympic trials in June, Thompson clocked an astonishing 100m sprint time of 9.77 seconds, the ninth-fastest ever recorded. This time is just 0.19 seconds shy of Usain Bolt’s world record, a mark that has seemed unassailable until now. Thompson’s performance has sparked excitement and speculation that Bolt’s record could be under threat.

Remarkably, Thompson claimed he eased off after the first 60 meters of that race, a strategy reportedly advised by his coach, Stephen ‘Franno’ Francis. Francis has previously guided Jamaican sprinters like Shelly-Ann Fraser-Price and Michael Frater to Olympic glory.

Overcoming Challenges

Thompson’s journey to this point has not been without its challenges. Growing up in rural Jamaica, he was coached by several Jamaican athletics legends and was recognized early on for his potential. Despite hamstring injuries and the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Thompson excelled in domestic competitions. His breakout moment came at the 2023 Jamaican Championships, where he recorded a 9.91-second 100m sprint, the 61st-fastest time in history.

A fourth-place finish at the 2023 Prefontaine Classic, where he competed against top athletes like Christian Coleman and Noah Lyles, solidified Thompson’s status as a contender on the world stage.

Olympic Dreams

As Thompson prepares for the Paris Olympics, he is aiming for the top step of the podium. Bookmakers are favoring him over reigning world champion Noah Lyles, though the margin between them is slim. Thompson’s raw timings have him ahead by four-hundredths of a second, but wind-adjusted times give Lyles a slight edge.

Beyond the Track

Away from the track, Thompson is known for his intelligence, humility, and close-knit family ties, especially with his mother and twin brother, Kishaun. Despite his modesty, Thompson exudes confidence about his Olympic prospects. “I was never short on confidence, but I believe I have much more to do as I can run way faster,” he declared after winning his first Jamaican title.

Even Noah Lyles, his main rival, acknowledges Thompson’s potential, albeit reluctantly. Lyles has reportedly expressed a desire to avoid competing against Thompson, saying, “I hope he stays injured.”

Looking Forward

The preliminary rounds of the 100m sprint at the Paris Olympics will take place on August 3, with the final scheduled for the following day. All eyes will be on Kishane Thompson as he seeks to uphold Jamaica’s storied legacy in sprinting and perhaps even challenge the legendary records set by Usain Bolt.

As Jamaica continues to produce world-class sprinters, the Paris 2024 Olympics will be another chapter in the nation’s rich athletic history. With athletes like Thompson leading the charge, the future of Jamaican sprinting looks incredibly bright.
