Paris Summer Olympics 2024: From Small Town Dreams to Olympic Glory, Kishane Thompson’s Journey & Family

Paris Summer Olympics 2024: From Small Town Dreams to Olympic Glory, Kishane Thompson’s Journey & Family

by Denise N. Fyffe

Many have waited with bated breath for who will take the throne of Usain Bolt in Jamaica. Well, will Kishane Thompson live up to the much-earned hype of ascending to such a destiny? Well, the Paris 2024 Olympics will either make sheep of men of giants of ants.

Kishane Thompson Mother’s Pride

Kishane Thompson’s mom was a very proud mommy as she watched her son do what she always knew he was capable of. She was one of the thousands who watched an ‘aww-worthy’ moment at Kingston’s National Stadium.

Kishane Thompson’s mother beamed with pride as the 22-year-old emerged as the ‘star of the show’ with his 9.77 world-leading 100m sprint. Not only did this timing secure him gold at the Jamaica National Championships, but it also heralded the arrival of a new phenom in the sprinting world.

For what was a career-defining victory for Thompson, the most ecstatic was his mother. Her son is now tied as the ninth fastest man in history! What could possibly be grander than this? But for a moment, let’s divert the attention from the man of the moment and have a look at the entire Thompson clan.

The Foundation: Thompson’s Parents

Grace Allen, is Kishane Thompson’s mother, who gave birth to the champion at Lionel Town Hospital. We now know where Thompson gets his athletic aptitude from. “I used to do high jump at school at Mitchell Town Primary. I think he got the genes from me,” Allen remarked. Moreover, she was quick to identify Thompson’s inclination, “He always loved to run, he always came first on sports day,” she said, recalling his achievements at Mitchell Town Basic School.

An Unbreakable Bond

A bond so deep, Allen appears Thompson’s go-to person in his moments of joy. The moment he dashed past the finish line, it was established: Thompson had been the fastest this year. Yet, he ran to the warm-up area outside, celebrating by embracing his mother. “Oh, I am so elated. I am so proud of my son. He deserves it,” she stated, smiling ear to ear. Now living a moment that she was admittedly looking forward to, Allen couldn’t have been prouder of her boy, who “is someone who really concentrates on what he is doing; he puts his all into it.”

Overcoming Adversity

Thompson’s victory comes after he overcame a substantial low point in his life. In January, Thompson unfortunately lost his father. The demise of a parent is a feeling that probably can never be penned into words. But in just five months after this jolt, Thompson managed to hop back on track and pull off this marvel. Perhaps the comfort of his mother and siblings eased the process a bit.

The Thompson Siblings

Thompson’s odyssey from a small town to the Olympic village this year is something that his siblings have perhaps witnessed up close. The Thompson trio consists of Kishane, his twin brother Kishaun, and their sister. They share a close bond.

“My half. My Yang. I’m Ying; he’s Yang. If you guys know philosophy, you know Ying and Yang is balance,” Kishane recently told sports journalist Trishana McGowan, referring to his brother Kishaun. The sprinter admitted, “He has always been there for me.”

Family Support and Olympic Dreams

It is clear that Thompson has always drawn great support from his family. And this month, he probably needs it more than ever. Ahead of the 33rd Olympic Games, hopefully, he can channel this strength and get himself an Olympic medal. The proud nation of Jamaica, and particularly his devoted family, will be cheering him on every step of the way.
