How to Keep Writing

People often ask me the same question with a mixture of awe, curiosity, and disbelief: “Where do you find the time to write so many books?” They ask it as if there is a secret door I slip through, a hidden pocket of hours that only writers know about. But the truth is far less glamorous and far more practical.

I make the time.

I commit to the process.

I treat writing as both a calling and a responsibility, and I show up for it with the same seriousness that others bring to their careers, their families, or their faith. Writing is not something I squeeze into the cracks of my life; it is something I build my life around.

When I began this journey in 2009, I didn’t have a roadmap. I didn’t have a mentor guiding me step by step. I didn’t have a community of writers cheering me on. What I had was a desire — a deep, persistent desire — to become a published author. I started with poetry because that was the language my heart understood at the time. Poetry was how I processed my emotions, how I made sense of the world, how I found my voice.

Over time, those poems became my first published titles. Then came the nonfiction books, the trade books, the fiction, the academic works, the career development guides, the declarations, the journals, the stories rooted in Jamaican life, and the testimonies shaped by my own experiences.

Every year, I challenged myself to grow. I wanted to write better, publish better, design better, and understand the industry more deeply. I studied trends, watched the market shift, experimented with formats, and learned how to produce books that could stand confidently among the millions released each year. If you’ve followed my blogs over the years — and the links are still at the back of this book — you’ve seen the evolution. You’ve watched my writing sharpen, my voice deepen, my production quality rise, and my confidence expand. None of that happened by accident.

It happened because I committed to the craft. And so can you.
