Indian Families in the Caribbean

The Indian presence in the Caribbean is woven into the region’s cultural fabric with a quiet but unmistakable strength. From the moment the first group of East Indians stepped onto Jamaican soil at Old Harbour Bay in 1845, they carried with them a sense of identity that was deeply rooted in ancestry, religion, and tradition.

Over the decades, more than 36,000 Indians arrived in Jamaica alone, and tens of thousands more settled in Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, Suriname, and other islands.

They came as indentured laborers after the abolition of slavery, bringing with them languages, rituals, and family structures that remained largely intact because they arrived as cohesive communities rather than as individuals torn from their homelands. Their family life was anchored in lineage and continuity, with many able to trace their ancestry back to villages in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Tamil Nadu, and other regions of India.

Even today, Indian families across the Caribbean maintain a strong sense of cultural identity, expressed in their festivals, foods, religious ceremonies, and the values they pass down to their children.
