The night ended with gold for Jamaica in the women’s 200m finals. Elaine Thompson, Jamaica’s new golden girl dominated the event and left it all on the track. In the end, she will be crowned the new double Olympic champion of both the 100m and the 200m. Thompson’s elation was so pure, as she did not realise that she had won the race, until the results were displayed on the score board.
Dafne Schippers, the World Champion in the event, was very formidable around the track and pushed Thompson along every meter. Even though she fell, some may say dived, at the finish; Dafne came away with the silver medal. Torie Bowie, of the USA, did a valiant run and was rewarded with the bronze medal. Talou placed fourth and Asher-Smith, from Britain, took fifth place. The Trinidad and Tobago runner, Michelle-Lee Ahye had to settle for sixth place and Stevens of the USA and Lalova-Collio were seventh and eigth respectively.
