Paris Summer Olympics 2024: Rasheed Broadbell Strikes Bronze in the 110m Hurdles Final

by Denise N. Fyffe

In a thrilling men’s 110-meter hurdles final at the Paris 2024 Olympics, Jamaica’s Rasheed Broadbell delivered an outstanding performance, capturing the bronze medal with a season’s best time of 13.09 seconds. This marks a significant achievement for the 23-year-old athlete, as it not only adds to Jamaica’s medal tally but also highlights his growing prominence on the world stage of sprint hurdling.

The race was dominated by the United States, with Grant Holloway taking the gold in a blazing 12.99 seconds, reinforcing his status as one of the top hurdlers in the world. Holloway’s teammate, Daniel Roberts, secured the silver medal, crossing the line in an identical time to Broadbell’s 13.09 seconds, but edging him out on the basis of photo-finish technology.

Broadbell’s journey to the Olympic podium has been marked by steady improvement and resilience. He has been a rising star in Jamaican track and field, consistently lowering his times throughout the season. His bronze medal at Paris 2024 is a testament to his hard work and dedication, marking Jamaica’s sixth overall medal at these Games and their second bronze.

Jamaica had strong representation in the final, with two other athletes, Orlando Bennett and Hansle Parchment, also competing. Bennett finished seventh with a time of 13.34 seconds, while Parchment, who was a gold medalist at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, placed eighth with a time of 13.39 seconds. Their performances, although not medaling, underscore the depth of talent that Jamaica continues to produce in the sprint hurdles discipline.

Broadbell’s Athletic Background

Rasheed Broadbell has quickly risen through the ranks of Jamaican athletics. Known for his speed and agility, he made his international debut in 2021 and has since been a consistent performer on the circuit. His breakthrough came in 2022 when he clocked a personal best of 12.99 seconds at the NACAC Championships, signaling his potential as a future Olympic medalist. His performance in Paris solidifies his place among the elite hurdlers globally.

The Race Dynamics

The final at the Stade de France was highly anticipated, with the top hurdlers in the world vying for Olympic glory. Grant Holloway, who entered the race as the favorite, executed a near-flawless race, maintaining a slight edge over the field from the start. Daniel Roberts, running in an adjacent lane to Broadbell, matched the Jamaican’s pace stride for stride. The photo finish between Roberts and Broadbell was one of the closest in recent Olympic history, with both athletes clocking the same time.

Broadbell’s bronze medal is particularly significant as it comes at a time when Jamaica is expanding its dominance from sprinting events to include hurdles and other field events. His success is expected to inspire a new generation of Jamaican hurdlers, further cementing the country’s legacy in track and field.

As Broadbell continues to develop, the world can expect even greater achievements from this promising young hurdler.
