Types of Families
by: Denise N. Fyffe
Families across the Caribbean appear in many shapes and structures. Just as the family has distinct functions, it also exists in diverse forms that reflect the lived experiences of our people. Across the world, seven basic types of families are commonly recognized, and all of them appear throughout the Caribbean—sometimes in traditional ways, sometimes in forms unique to our region.
Global Family Forms
The seven basic family forms found worldwide include:
- Nuclear: parents and one or more children.
- Single Parent: one parent raising a child or children.
- Extended: a nuclear or single‑parent family living with extended relatives.
- Blended: a family in which one or both parents have children from previous unions.
- Adoptive: any family form where the child is legally adopted.
- Foster: any family form where a child is placed through government or private agencies.
- Other types: households that do not include parents and children, such as newly married couples or communal living arrangements.
These forms exist across English, Spanish, French, and Dutch speaking Caribbean islands. However, the Caribbean has also developed its own variations, shaped by slavery, indentureship, migration, poverty, and cultural traditions.
The Family Code of the Caribbean reminds us that “the family is the elementary cell of society,” responsible for nurturing, socializing, and preparing the next generation.
